Technical requirements to study online with the University of Roehampton
To study online you must be able to access and use our Student Portal Inspirenet. From Inspirenet, you will access your online classroom, your Student Financial Portal, the Online Library, as well as your student community. To use study online you will need the following:
A compatible Internet browser
We recommend using Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer.
An internet connection at home
You must have a reliable Internet connection at home. It is not realistic to study online if you only have access at work or in Internet cafes. Although broadband (cable/ASDL) will enhance the experience of using Inspirenet, it is still possible to study if you only have a dial-up connection.
A personal email address
You will be provided with a study email address (@roehampton-online.ac.uk) that we will use for all communications related to your studies. In addition to this, you will need to provide us with a secondary email address that we can use if for any reason you do not respond to email sent to your study email address.
Should you have a Hotmail or Yahoo email address please ensure that you add the University email’s to your safe list to avoid them going into your spam/junk filter.
A suitable computer with supported software
If you have a computer running either a Microsoft Windows or an Apple OS X operating system that is less than five years old, it will normally be fast enough and have sufficient memory to use Inspirenet.
It is not recommended to use a tablet or mobile device to study online. Your readings and small questions can be done using a tablet or mobile device, but when writing your Individual Assignments, Shared Activities, or your Final Project, you will want to have a laptop or desktop, with a full-sized keyboard, for ease of use.
During your studies you will need the following software:
- Microsoft Office (to complete most of your assignments)
- Adobe Acrobat (to access documents in PDF format)
- Java and Flash Player (in order to view some of the online imbedded videos, though there are different accessibility options provided)
- Vital Source (in order to read eBooks provided within the classroom: https://www.vitalsource.com/)
- Some programmes may also require use of SPSS but if this is the case, more information will be provided inside the classroom.
Using devices with unsupported software
You are free to try and use other operating systems and/or software if you wish, but you must be able to use a computer with a supported operating system and other required software to access Inspirenet in case you encounter technical issues. We cannot provide technical assistance if you have issues using unsupported software and cannot accept responsibility if you are unable to submit work by its deadline due to technical issues caused by using unsupported software.
